The Huawei nova 9 is a smartphone from Huawei. It was first released in China in September, and now it's being released worldwide.
It has a pro counterpart with a beefier cooling system, a smaller battery, and faster charging. Apart than that, it's pretty much the same as the standard version of the phone; however, we're not expecting it to be released abroad anytime soon, at least not yet. So, what can you expect from Huawei's newest phone?
The Huawei nova 9 comes with the following major characteristics.
The nova 9 features a unique design, thanks in part to a prominent camera island. The primary 50 MP camera has an accent ring around it, while the other three cameras are packaged together like a video game controller. It records 12.5-megapixel stills by default. It also contains an 8-megapixel ultrawide, a 2-megapixel depth sensor, and a 2-megapixel macro camera. Low-light images were also good, and we found that night mode just restored highlights and had a minor effect overall.
The phones are available in black or starry blue with a frosted glass back. The phone's top and bottom have been flattened to give it a more modern appearance, and the bottom has a single downward-facing speaker.
On the top of the display, there's a slightly larger punch hole for the 32-megapixel selfie camera. The 6.5-inch OLED includes HDR10 compatibility for 10-bit colours and a 120-hertz refresh rate, making it look exceptionally sharp and vibrant.
It's a shame they don't have stereo speakers in this device. Also, there is no official IP rating, so don't use it in pools. The phone's front is aggressively curved, which adds to its premium appearance, but it's not for everyone in terms of usability.
The nova 9 comes with a 4300 mAh battery and a 66-watt charger. Huawei promises fast charging speeds, claiming that the battery can be fully charged in 38 minutes.
The phone has a base storage of 128 gigabytes and 8 gigabytes of RAM. Even though the chipset should be 5G, it has a snapdragon 778G. Because Qualcomm is not permitted to legally provide 5G chips to Huawei, the nova 9 only offers 4G connectivity. Fortunately, this does not come at the expense of other connectivity options, thus dual-band wi-fi-6, Bluetooth 5.2, and NFC will still be available.
In terms of software, EMUI-12 on top of Android 11 is used for contactless payments. It doesn't have the lightest UI, but it does offer a lot of customization features as well as some handy proprietary applications.
Huawei is still fighting its American problems, and while it's a shame that they can't give Europeans all they have. The Nova 9 appears to be a sleek, powerful smartphone with a decent camera system, and we can't wait to put it to the test.
