Xperia Pro-I Introduction
Sony's newest flagship, the Xperia Pro-I, is a follow-up to the limited Xperia Pro, but this time it's aimed at prosumers who know their way around photography and cinematography. It's a mainstream smartphone targeted at photography enthusiasts, and Sony hopes that they'll use it on a daily basis. It's the first phone to feature a 1"-Type Sony sensor, 12-bit RAW output, and a variety of camera apps to take advantage of the powerful camera setup.
It's based on the Xperia One Mark iii, however, aside from the unique design and high-end technology, the camera sensor is undoubtedly the most prominent feature. It's one of the most powerful we've ever seen in a smartphone. We had a chance to look at it early on, and these are our initial thoughts.
Xperia Pro-I Design & Protection
The phone has the same tall drink of water form factor as prior experience, with a slight frosted back protected by Gorilla Glass. There is a clear change in design: first, there is the main camera's outstanding lens, which is substantially larger than its siblings; second, there is the frame's unique design; and finally, everything else is premium. There's a shutter key, just like on previous Xperia phones, but it's been revamped and has a nicer tactile reaction, so we found ourselves using it more than the virtual shutter button.
The front has Gorilla Glass Victus for IP68 protection, the sides are of similar thickness as well (8.3mm vs. 8.9mm), and it weighs 211 grams and feels substantial in the hand. The 6.5-inch OLED with 1B colours on the front has the same 21x9 form factor as the Xperia one mark iii and boasts a 4K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The panel fully supports the BT.2020 colour space and is designed to meet the demands of professionals.
The Sony Xperia Pro-I backside is extremely amazing. It's protected by a matte-finish flat Gorilla Glass sheet. The triple camera is present, as are all other sensors and the flash, but if you were expecting a Galaxy Ultra, iPhone, or Oppo monstrosity, you will be unhappy.
One thing we admire about Sony is its steadfast stance on screen cutouts. The company has never crippled a display with them, and it appears that it will never do so again. Unlike Apple, which now sells MacBooks with notches! That's why the top and bottom screen bezels are a little thicker, although we think they help a lot when using the phone in landscape mode.
The 8MP selfie camera and one of the speakers, which also serves as an earpiece, are located above the screen. There's also a notification LED light in the top left corner, which looks to be something that only Sony keeps alive these days. The additional stereo speaker is located beneath the screen. The Xperia Pro-I is one of the few phones with absolutely symmetrical speakers on the market. They also have everything you'd want in terms of audio, including a 3.5mm audio jack, which is nearly unheard of on a flagship phone.
Sony Xperia Pro I Battery Capacity & OS
The Xperia Pro-I contains Li-Po 4500 mAh non-removable battery. Its 30-watt fast charger can get it up to 50 percent in half an hour which is all right. Unfortunately, there is no wireless charging on this one.
The Xperia Pro-I is powered by Android 11 with the Xperia UI on top. The lock screen is straightforward, featuring a customizable clock, a camera shortcut, and a Google Assistant shortcut. The home screen is as basic as it gets.
Sony Xperia Pro I apps
The Google feed is in the leftmost pane, but you may turn it off if you don't want to see it. Google also owns the fast toggles/notification area. As part of the Conversations features in this version of Android, you receive notification history and Bubbles shortcuts.
The Xperia Pro-I also has Sony's amazing Multi-Window functionality. The software package also includes Sony's Game Enhancer. It's a comprehensive game management tool that has two interfaces: a game hub/launcher and an overlay that you pull out from the side while playing. The rest of the software contains a couple of Sony photography apps as well as the standard Google apps.
Processor Detail
The CPU is Qualcomm snapdragon 888 5G, and the phone will have 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, plus a card slot for additional storage. So far, everything about this phone screams that it's designed for photography and filming, so how does the camera system look like?
Xperia Pro I Camera Review
You get three 12-megapixel sensors: an ultrawide, a telephoto with two-time zoom and OIS, and the main camera with a one-inch type sensor, phase detection autofocus, and a dual aperture, making it one of the most distinctive camera sensors ever in a smartphone.
While the sensor is the same 20-megapixel one-inch imager seen in the current Sony RX100 VII, Sony is only using the megapixels in the center, so while it is technically a one-inch sensor, the results are equal to a smaller one with huge pixels.
The first photos we took with the primary camera turned out beautifully, with very natural processing and organic-looking detail. The dynamic range should be higher than before, and low-light images should be noticeably better. The images appear to be bright, energetic, and colorful at first glance.
The Xperia Pro-I has a dual F/2.0 and F/4.0 aperture, which is unusual in the smartphone industry. A smaller aperture gives you more background depth and sharper surroundings, while a larger F/2.0 aperture gives you a smoother diffractive background. Unfortunately, unlike previous Samsung phones, the variable aperture does not work automatically; instead, you have complete control over which aperture is chosen for each image.
While it may appear that Sony has included two videography apps and a photography pro app, this may allow videographers and photographers far more control than many other smartphones.
Most flagships place a strong emphasis on the camera, but it's rare to find a phone with such a wide range of settings and versatility. When it came to photography and videography, our initial impressions of the Xperia Pro-I were positive. The photographs that we have taken are of exceptional quality.
